      It did need some help, when I got it it had the remains of an animal nest in it, and I ended up mostly disassembling the mechanism for cleaning. The dashpot did have a good amount of the original oil in it, but some of it had turned to wax so I cleaned it all out and filled it with fresh oil. The paint was flaking off so I lightly cleaned then repainted it, with the goal of making it look decent but not freshly painted. All in all im happy with it, especially the perfect glass

      Actually when I got it it had probably set in an attic or barn for a number of years, as it had the remains of an animal nest in it (including some nuts). I mostly disassembled the mechanism for cleaning, and as the paint was flaking off I lightly cleaned and put a fresh coat of paint on it (with the goal of making it look good without looking freshly repainted). Im happy with how it came out, especially the perfect glass, which seems to be pretty uncommon in these machines

    I personally am a less is more kinda guy. Something this complicated, with as many tiny parts as there are and considering its age, I wouldn't have done it this way. That said, would my way have been better... Of course not, you did what you felt was best and that you had the necessary skills to get it functioning correctly, which you did. All things considered, good job!

    • @bss1250
      @bss1250 2 місяці тому

      Thanks, but yes you have a point: Did I have to completely disassemble it to clean it? Probably not, I probably couldve flushed the dirt out with solvent and it wouldve been fine. But I do feel better if I can clean each part individually, plus it wouldve made a much less interesting video. Also diving into projects like this can be a learning experience, not just for me but also for the people watching the video. The more complicated things I take apart and reassemble the more knowledge and confidence I have to take even more complicated things apart. That being said, it is good to know your limits and not get in over your head, I definitely wouldnt completely disassemble a Marchant Silent Speed (although people like John Wolff have). I guess what im trying to say is I probably went a bit beyond what is required both for the learning experience and to make a more interesting (and hopefully useful) video

      @@bss1250 all are very valid points and you are very correct about making an interesting video, you definitely succeeded there. Thankfully, you didn't artificially age or induce excessive rusting to make it seem as if you were pulling off some sort of miraculous restoration as I've seen many times from other content creators. Yours was very clearly in original condition and you still did a good job of maintaining the character of the piece. Thank you for the response and insight into your methods.

    Tate's improvements really stand out from being used to a "normal" french arithmometer - he did not only modify the locking devices and replaced the round clearing knobs with cranks, he also replaced the main crank of the machine with a much more sturdy example - the original crank was a much more flimsy affair. Also, the knob for the direction switch is also exchanged for a chunkier example. Very nice machine - cool to have the original documentation too!

    Great video! I have a Marchant EB9, but the drum has swelled quite a bit and the fiber gear is missing teeth. I'm considering 3D printing a gear and seeing if it will hold up. Marchant machines are my favorite, I'm dying to see my Deci-magic come to life but it's such a complicated machine.

    • @bss1250
      @bss1250 3 місяці тому

      thanks, Ive done the drum repairs on several machines but I dont think Ive seen a damaged fiber gear in these. One of the fiber gears forms part of the slip clutch that protects the machine if it jams (its a smooth slip though, not the ratcheting kind like the Fridens have). Good luck with the 3D printing, these machines are cool/fun so definitely worth it. I have a few videos on the early silent speed machines, not sure if theyd have info that would be useful on a Deci-magic. I still havent figured out the division control on the silent speeds, everthings packed so dense in it you cant really tell anything thats going on. My approach with them so far has been to clean what I can see, oil everything, and hope for the best

    • @Starwarsfan2099
      @Starwarsfan2099 3 місяці тому

      @@bss1250 Yeah, I'm hoping a 3D printed piece will serve as a backup for if the slip clutch fails or something. Yep, your videos have been incredibly helpful in getting some of my other Marchant machines going! I've loosened up quite a lot on the Deci-magic, but it's stuck in some part of the multiplication cycle. I think the deci-magic is the final boss of calculators, it's incredibly packed and dense. Worse than any other Marchant, worse than the Monroe IQ lol. I've actually got two of them now, I got lucky and found another one last year but I haven't gotten around to tackling it yet. I need to tear the covers off both side by side and look around. Externally it looks more grimey than the other one I failed at getting going agian lol. I have a model A serial 8487. When it is set into home position the brass tabs appear to be at 1 instead of 0 per the nickel face plate. However they are mechanically at 0 since they don't add as the machine is wound. Also, when the machine is set to home position the input slider clearing mechanism won't work, it is only when the crank is rotated slightly counterclockwise (and the input tabs now show at 0 on the faceplate) that it will work. It's like someone took it apart and then put it back together one position off. Any advice on how to fix?

    • @bss1250
      @bss1250 4 місяці тому

      It sounds like the pinwheel drum might be 1 tooth off on its engagement with the crank handle. You would have to take both sides off the base plate (the sides usually have alignment pins with the base so you cant slide the sides off individually, the whole assembly of both sides and pinwheel drum has to be lifted straight up off the base) then slide the pinwheel drum away from the right side far enough that the teeth of the gear on the pinwheel drum and the gear on the crank come out of mesh and turn the pinwheel drum back 1 tooth and reengage them then reassemble. It could be more than just 1 tooth off, you might have to try a couple times to get them timed right so the pinwheel drum is at home when the crank is at home

    • @davidsheler6741
      @davidsheler6741 4 місяці тому

      Thanks!@@bss1250 I actually stumbled on that solution last night. I have everything pretty much working now except that the number the 9th from the right on the bottom carriage does not clear when the clearing knob is turned. It works when doing calculations and all of the other numbers clear but that one just stays at whatever number it's on. Oddly, that 9th digit also has what looks like an OEM piece of brass metal slotted right under the rod. I can't see how it's attached and doesn't seem to inhibit the movement of the dial in any way but it seems coincidental that the only dial that doesn't clear also has this brass piece right by it. Your machine does not have the brass piece at all. Any idea on what this is? I'm hesitant to take the carriage apart as I don't know if springs are going to fly all over.

    • @bss1250
      @bss1250 4 місяці тому

      Im not sure about the brass piece, but as for the clearing the shaft which runs through the center of the digit wheels in the carriage has pins on it (1 pin for each wheel), usually when the clearing doesnt work for one digit the pin for that digit has broken off that shaft. You can reference this video “Rapid Calculator Repair: How to Fix a Mechanical Calculator When Some Digits Wont Clear” (ua-cam.com/video/yHWYpApQO6Q/v-deo.html) where I repair this issue on the Rapid Calculator, the carriage should be similar enough to the Brunsviga. Most of these pinwheel calculators all have very similar carriages.
